Black Antelope Law attended a Wellbeing Policy Index seminar at Mind to find out what they could introduce to ensure employees were mentally happy and healthy, and felt comfortable in discussing their feelings. They have now introduced activity to help make this happen.
What was the business (other case) for action?
Previous employees had worked in magic circle law firms and noticed a glaring gap in policy and practice designed to look after the mental health of employees. They identified stigma surrounding mental health issues and that they had no single person or department to turn to as an outlet to discuss such issues or deal with them.
What did Black Antelope Law do?
Black Antelope Law decided to appoint a Mental Health and Wellbeing Officer and sent an email to all employees so they knew who to approach. The selected individual was trained as a Peer counsellor so had the requisite skills to deal with any sensitive issues that may be raised.
They have developed a system that encourages employees to regularly meet with the Mental Health and Wellbeing officer to discuss any issues they wish to raise in a safe environment. They have done this to ensure no employee feels overwhelmed by pressure, workload etc. and feel able to work in a stress free and happy environment. They believe this will ultimately lead to a more productive workforce and workplace.
BA Law has nominated Mind as their charity of the year and has conducted fundraising events including Bake Sales. They are now planning a charity evening dinner to raise awareness and funds.
What were the results?
Benefits include a happier, healthier and productive workforce. Activity has not only improved the quality of outputs but has also strengthened relationships internally.

Always nominate an individual as an Officer of Mental Health and Wellbeing and clearly identify who they are. Ensure all employees are aware who they are and how to contact them. Ensure that employees are aware they can approach them at any time, not just during allocated monthly or quarterly reviews.
