15 Winckley Square, Preston, is conscious of the importance of promoting wellbeing (physical and mental) for everyone involved in Chambers.

What was the ‘business’ (other case) for action?

Recognising members and staff all work under pressure and some of the subject matter at the Bar can be distressing. 15wsq took the circumstances caused by Covid as an opportunity to look again at their approach to wellbeing.

15wsq wanted their wellbeing policy and overall strategy to:

  • Increase productivity by (for example) creating a virtuous circle of support.
  • Reduce absenteeism, especially at short – notice where (for example) barristers and staff felt overwhelmed by events or general circumstances.
  • Ensure their reputation as a high – quality local employer.
  • Satisfy their duty of care to barristers and staff.
  • Help 15wsq comply with equality and diversity rules within the BSB Code of Conduct (e.g. Rule C110 and reasonable adjustment policy)
  • Help their members comply with the BSB Code of Conduct (e.g. Rules C24, C87).

What did Chambers do?

  • Implement a wellbeing policy, with the assistance of the Bar Council Wellbeing Portal, ensuring that policy was met in word and in spirit, by the actions of Chambers management committee.
  • Actively identify those who might require wellbeing support, via Heads of Team and wellbeing representatives (confidentially), ensuring regular check-ins by phone or by video meetings with those identified as needing wellbeing support.
  • Give staff access to a “Pets as Therapy” dog within the workplace (though this has been curtailed by Covid restrictions).



  • Funding has now been approved by Chambers management committee for annual “wellbeing” awards. A low-key opportunity to recognise those who have played a role in promoting and supporting wellbeing in the previous year. For example, “computer buddies” who assisted members of Chambers with remote access to hearings.

What were the results?

Some initial scepticism from some members of Chambers. After all, the profession puts high value on a “can – do” attitude! However, the specific and general results have been encouraging over time. Chambers has no doubt that wellbeing is taken more seriously in general by barristers and staff. For example, by reducing the stigma associated with mental health vulnerabilities.


‘15wsq’s therapy dog is undoubtedly the star of their wellbeing initiatives, but behind the fur is a considered and caring approach to members and staff and a genuine commitment to tackling stigma and providing support where required’.

  • Take for granted those who directly or indirectly support wellbeing in your business.
  • Expect instant changes in approach to wellbeing.
  • Be afraid to consult and to be imaginative in what wellbeing services you might offer.
