Over the past three years Middle Temple has introduced a range of initiatives aimed at supporting its Members.
These include Mindfulness drop-in sessions, the Survive & Thrive series of lectures, a new mentoring scheme and yoga.
What was the business (other case) for action?
The Wellbeing at the Bar project landed at a sensible time for Middle Temple as they were just finalising the Inn’s new Strategic Plan.
As part of this plan they aimed to:
• Identify and provide services for members which would support them throughout their professional lives.
• Promote engagement with members of the Inn, wherever and in whatever way they practise, to encourage them to play a full part in the life of the Inn, which they should regard as their professional home.
What did the Inn do?
Middle Temple has introduced a range of initiatives designed to educate members in wellbeing techniques and practices, and to provide opportunities to gain social support from others, including:
1.The Survive and Thrive Programme aims to ensure that Members of the Inn and the Bar, as well as those who work closely with them (Clerks, Chambers Directors, Practice Managers) acquire the ideas, skills and knowledge to broaden their awareness and understanding of everything from macro business-level matters, to identifying ways to think, behave and work differently. Including wellbeing related events such as:
2. A series of self-contained Yoga sessions.
3. A series of Drop-In Mindfulness sessions for members.
4. A Mentoring Scheme, intended to assist members of the Inn from all backgrounds with career development from first tenancy or employment as an employed barrister (not a paralegal) through to retirement.
5. The Temple Women’s Forum in collaboration with the Inner Temple was established to support and inspire women at the Bar and in the Judiciary throughout their careers.
6. The Employed Bar Forum, also in collaboration with the Inner Temple, was established to support and bring together members of the Inn not in independent practice.

What were the results?
Feedback from members has been outstanding and has led them to develop their Wellbeing offering further, extending the programmes they currently run whilst searching for other opportunities. Some of the most positive outcomes have been that barristers and clerks have met in environments where they can be with others who are experiencing similar issues they are.
Any platform for promoting Wellbeing must be flexible for members. Middle Temple offer larger events where people can share their experiences with one another and learn from speakers, whilst ensuring they still offer opportunities behind closed doors for those that don’t feel comfortable in open environments.
